Kathleen Hutten is a Nova Scotian composer, songwriter and music educator currently based in Toronto. With a background and training as a vocalist, choral musician and screen composer, her work draws from a wide variety of genres. Kathleen’s music is heavily influenced by her East Coast roots, having grown up surrounded by a rich culture of folk music and community music-making. The result of these influences is a compositional approach that is rooted in storytelling and focused on natural text setting and expressive vocal lines.
Kathleen’s first choral work, Someone Will Remember Us, was recently premiered by Chroma Vocal Ensemble (dir. Michael Pady). Her work for screen has been featured in a number of film festivals.
As a music educator, Kathleen values music that is meaningful and approachable for performers and audiences alike. Whether writing for choir, stage, or screen, she aims to write in a way that is accessible for all audiences.
